New Books for High School English Classes

The Cissna Park High School English class taught by Denise Burns has been undertaking some very interesting reading thanks to the generosity of the Cissna Park Education Foundation mini-grants.  This year, we were able to purchase class sets of two different Shakespeare plays, “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet.”  We were also able to purchase a class set of an historical fiction novel based on a true story, entitled The Light in Hidden Places.  Additionally, we were able to add some extra copies of Tuesdays with Morrie to our class set that we will use in our main curriculum next year at the 12th-grade level.

Students in the junior and senior classes will have read both “Hamlet” and The Light in Hidden Places by the end of this school year, and our freshmen class has read “Romeo and Juliet” as their first foray into Shakespeare’s plays. As seen in our pictures, we partook in two very educational yet entertaining activities along with our studies: a crime scene investigation activity based on the tragedy of “Romeo and Juliet” and a Guess Who game designed to enhance our understanding of character development in “Hamlet.”
